I. W. Taber (1830-1912)
Isaiah West Taber was born in Massachusetts on August 17, 1830.
Taber came to California first in 1850 returning to New Bedford in 1854 for ten years and returning back to California in 1864 working in the studio of Bradley and Rulofson at 429 Montrgomery Street, 1864 till 1873. Opening his own gallery I. W. Taber & Co. at 26 Montrgomery Street around 1875.
When Watkins lost his studio and negatives to creditor John J. Cook. Cook, along with photographer I. W. Taber, took over the Yosemite Art Gallery. Taber began marketing Watkins stereoviews under the I. W. Taber label, although keeping Watkins original view numbers and titles. Taber later moved his gallery to 8 Montgomery Street above the Hibernia Bank in San Francisco. In the 1906 at the time of the S.F. Earthquake he was 76 he lost his gallery and negative collection, that was the end of his photographic career. He died on February 22 of 1912. |
