Bixby Creek Bridge on California Highway OneThis unusual view looking north taken, by photographer Pat Hathaway, shows the underside of Bixby bridge from the temporary deck at about midspan looking at the North Tower and part of the arch. It shows work is being done for Caltrans' by prime contractor Vahani Construction of San Francisco and other's Faye Bernstein & Associates, Waldron Engineering. One of the most-photographed man-made features on the West Coast, Bixby Creek Bridge, is 13.3 miles South of Carmel. At its completion, it was one of the largest single-arch concrete bridge in the world. Bixby Creek Bridge is 714 feet, long with a main span of 320 feet, and is 265 feet high above Bixby Creek, The builder was the Ward Engineering Co. for the California State Highway Department. The over $20 million seismic retrofit was started in May of 1998 and completed in November of 2000.
