Pat’s Adventure Blog: Genesis, Gear, and Big Boy Dan
The coffee was strong this morning, and the conversation was even stronger. My old friend Big Boy Dan swung by the house. If you haven’t met Dan, he’s the nicest guy you’ll ever cross—built like a mountain, heart of gold, and a vocabulary that’s… let’s say economical. He doesn’t need many words when he’s loaded with enough green stuff to buy a small island.
Dan and I go way back to the early days, lugging tripods across hills before the sun even thought about coming up. It was good to see his face, though I did have to dodge the subject of his portfolio for a minute. Now it seems we are reduced to figuring out
Medicare and health insurance.
The Genesis Debate: Gaps vs. The Bang
We cracked open the Good Book and started digging into Genesis. It’s funny how two guys looking at the same stars see two different beginnings:
Dan’s “Gap Theory”
Dan is convinced there’s a massive time gap between Genesis 1:1 and 1:2. He reckons that’s where all the billions of years and the “ruin-restitution” happened. He doesn’t say much, but when he says “Gap,” he means it.
My Take (The Relativistic Bang)
I’m more of a Big Bang fellow. I look at it through the lens of Einstein’s General Relativity. To me, creation is about the fabric of space-time stretching out. If you factor in time dilation at the gravity of the initial singularity, six days at the “source” could be billions of years from our perspective.
We actually got into a fascinating piece Dan found over at the
Harvard Science Review regarding how aliens are headed this way.
The AMZN $20k “Gift”
Eventually, the talk turned to money. I felt a pang in my chest when Dan mentioned AMZN. I talked him into a heavy position a while back, and he’s currently sitting on a $20,000 loss. Most guys would be swinging for your head, but not Dan. He just gave that big, slow shrug of his and said,
“Market goes down, Pat. It’s okay.”
God bless that man’s heart. He’s got more patience than a saint and more cash than he knows what to do with, so he’s not sweating it. We started dreaming about a trip down to
Baja—just the two of us, some tacos, and nothing but the horizon.
The Hunt for the “Top of the Line”
Well
California Sports fans, I’m currently looking to upgrade the kit. Fifteen cameras in the cabinet is a start, but a man needs the best if he’s going to capture the soul of the desert. I’ve been eyeing the absolute peaks of 2026 tech:
- Sony α1 II: This is the current king. 50.1 megapixels, 30 fps, and AI-powered autofocus that can track a hawk’s eye from a mile away. It’s a $6,500 beast, but it’s the gold standard for a reason.
- Canon EOS R1: The flagship for the speed demons. If we’re shooting action in Baja, this 24MP stacked sensor with “Eye Control AF” is what I need.
- Nikon Z9 II (The Rumor Mill): The whispers are getting loud. 46MP, 60fps RAW, and rumors of RED cinema technology integrated into the body. This might be the one to wait for.
Where to Point the Lens Next?
Since we’re staying in California for a bit before Baja, I’m thinking of hitting these spots next:
- Alabama Hills: Those rounded boulders against the jagged, snow-capped Mount Whitney are perfect for testing the dynamic range on a new Sony.
- Pigeon Point Lighthouse: I want to get some long exposures of the Pacific mist crashing against the cliffs under the stars.
- Big Sur (McWay Falls): I’ve got a vision for a sunset shot where the waterfall hits the sand just as the light turns that perfect amber.
