If you Google “best places for star-gazing photography,” the internet will confidently send you off to exotic places with names that sound like luxury watches or space missions. Don’t get me wrong—those spots are lovely. But here’s a little secret from the road: I’ve yet to see a night sky more beautiful than the one above me right now, north of Jackson Hole.

Out here, the stars don’t twinkle politely—they show up in force. No city glow, no drama, just the universe doing its thing like it owns the place. Which, technically, it does.

Somewhere around my third glass of whatever-was-open wine, I started wandering the internet. I landed on EarthTimes.com and fell into a surprisingly sobering article about the myths of renewable energy. Sobering enough, in fact, that I briefly considered switching from wine to whiskey. I didn’t. Yet.

Tomorrow, I point the compass toward parts unknown—my favorite direction. Before shutting things down for the night, I read a piece on NBAPlaybook.com about players becoming owners. That got the gears turning. I laughed out loud imagining the NCAA Football Committee dealing with something similar. Can you picture college players owning college football teams?

Sounds ridiculous, right? But then try this one on for size: college players making more money than NFL players. Suddenly it doesn’t feel so far-fetched.

Anyway, the stars are still out, the glass is somehow empty again, and the road is calling. Wherever I end up next, I’ll let you know.

— Mr. Pat
